Joanna Plant designed an airy, cool Ibizan house, bringing the kitchen and dining room into one. Concrete-topped units fronted in limed oak pick up on the exposed beams. The stools are by Cox & Cox. A polished concrete floor and white walls provide a pale backdrop for a rustic table from Maison Artefact, paired with Arne Jacobsen chairs. An Aga was shipped over for the kitchen and a fireplace squeezed in the corner of the room for warmth during the damp winters.

  • Michael Sinclair

In this Bath house by Patrick Williams, the dining room and kitchen are linked by an exposed wooden archway. Furniture from different periods sits in harmony, including pendant lights from a French brocante and a table that belonged to Patrick's great-grandfather. An island made by Marcus Jacka serves as the hub of the room.

  • Alicia Taylor

In this Arts and Crafts villa by Todhunter Earle, there is a formal dining room as well as a dining area by the kitchen. The colours bring it together with the orange of the Kelly Wearstler table lamp – sat on 'The Rattan Ripple Console' by Soane – picked up by 'The Crillon Stools', also from Soane, upholstered in 'Walnut Cowhide Leather'.

  • Alexander James

Architect William Smalley has transformed this Edwardian villa into a modern family house that delights its owner by opening up spaces and working with a palette of natural colours and materials. The custom 10-metre-long brushed steel worktop is made by Ottima. The kitchen has a 'floating' wooden bench designed by William.

  • Owen Gale

In the designer Sophie Ashby's flat custom-made pieces blend effortlessly with the couples' antiques. Mid-century Italian kitchen chairs give weight to minimal kitchen cupboards. A trolley on wheels with a tiled worktop takes the place of a kitchen island. The living section of the room is made distinct with a soft white rug.

This Georgian house in London was decorated by Ben Pentreath, who has cleverly brought together the kitchen and dining room seamlessly, while giving each space its own identity. A Lovell Purbeck Capstone floor runs throughout both and offers a muted contrast with bespoke Bulthaup cabinets topped with quartzite in the kitchen. Traditional witjes tiles from Delft Tiles create a backdrop for a basket by Jenny Crisp and an Indonesian tray, which hang from a brass rail. Joinery featuring a central dresser is painted in Emente's 'Cassel' in the dining area, where there is a bespoke oak table by Robert Lynch, with Fifties 'Carimate' chairs by Magistretti for Cassina.

In Rita Konig's farmhouse in Durham, a dresser by Plain English, painted in the company's 'Army Camp' green, holds a sink from Howe paired with brass taps from Barber Wilsons & Co. Rita's collection of antique glassware is displayed on the top shelf and the dining table sits right by it, creating a cosy country kitchen. A mix of Arts and Crafts dining chairs from AvW Antiques (with cushions in 'Persian Flower' in jewel by Soane) and antique ladderback chairs surround the large antique Italian dining table from Tallboy Interiors. Lighting is provided by a 'Stella' glass pendant from Pooky and antique opaline-glass coolie lights from Howe.

  • Andrew Montgomery

Maria Speake of Retrouvius was called in to remodel Henrietta Courtauld of The Land Gardener's London house, creating the most lovely kitchen with a dining space in the process. The Plain English kitchen, with its cream Aga, was installed 12 years ago. Maria had it repainted in an Emery & Cie green to refresh the room. By confining the kitchen counters to two sides of the room, Maria created both ample workspace and allowed space for the round dining table and chairs to fit in on the other side, looking out onto the lovely gardens.

  • Sharyn Cairns

Another Ben Pentreath kitchen-come-dining-room, this one is much more casual and in the country style fitting his Dorset house. The kitchen's Aga was installed in the Sixties; Ben added the wooden floor, painted in Farrow & Ball's 'Hardwick White', and found the glazed wall cupboard in a junk shop.
The kitchen was the first room to be addressed. 'A rich orangey brown seemed the right colour - it needed warming up,' says Ben.

  • Benjamin Edwards

Bespoke cabinets blend elements of the 'Suffolk' and 'Henley' ranges by Neptune in Emma Sims-Hilditch's London kitchen-dining room. The 'Kimmeridge Limestone' floor tiles are by Artisans of Devizes. Irregularly sized wood panelling is painted in Farrow & Ball's 'Purbeck Stone' throughout the room to tie it together, and Emma designed the oak table and bench, with cushions in pretty prints by Fermoie.

  • Davide Lovatti

'I wanted a classic look – utilitarian, but not too kitchen-ish,' says Tara Craig of her own London flat, where a corner of the sitting room is taken up by the kitchen designed by Tara with Marcus Ayshford Sanford of Archidrum. The cabinets are painted in a bespoke apricot paint by Papers and Paints and feature worktops in Bianco Carrara marble. French 19th-century chairs, reupholstered by Tara's firm, Ensemblier, surround a Victorian mahogany pedestal table. Rose Uniacke's 'Small Clear Lantern' adds a contemporary touch.

  • Rachel Whiting

Another Maria Speake design, this kitchen is made entirely from reclaimed pieces, and demonstrates that salvage and comfort can be happy bedfellows. The owner is a keen cook, so the kitchen had to function well and house all his equipment. The main drawers came from a Victorian shop and were in a dire condition, so Maria's joiner rebuilt the frame and put the drawers on to modern runners so that they close softly and easily. The island was made from scratch using reclaimed iroko laboratory worktops and the marble for the splashback came from an old shop fitting, while she found the eighteenth-century, carved-stone roundels in a stonemason's yard. Elsewhere, the table is made from a school laboratory worktop.

This kitchen in Lamb's House in Leith is the ultimate rustic, cosy country kitchen. While the house features formal dining spaces too, this multi-use room is the most charming with original beams, a Welsh dresser displaying blue and white crockery and kitchen units painted in pastel blue. The Aga keeps it warm while the wood running throughout the room brings it together.

  • Paul Massey

The traditional country kitchen in this restored manor house has an Aga and complementing units on either side, with the owners' collection of copper pans hanging along the length of the wall. Belgian designer and craftsman Joris Van Apers custom-made the table, which is paired with chairs and a bench bought in Petworth by the owners.

  • Lucas Allen

As kitchen, dining and sitting room are all in one, this is the hub of the house in this mews house by Caroline Riddell - a place where furniture old and new sits happily side by side. In the kitchen area, Carrara-marble-topped units are painted in 'Hague Blue' by Farrow & Ball. A mustard blind from Susan Deliss brings warmth to the space. A white kitchen sink is inlaid into the counter. Jelly molds twinkle on the wall beneath a shelf used for white tableware. The marble worktop is paired with blue cabinets. a mix-and-match of chairs around the dining table create an informal look.
